The proclamation of the solemnity of St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church was made during very troubled times. Pope Pius IX, in answer to the requests and prayers of all the prelates and faithful all over the world declared St. Joseph, Patron of the Church on December 8, 1870, the feast of the Immaculate Conception of his spouse.
