US District Letter: Father's Day & Catholic Family Celebrations

In the US District June Newsletter, Fr. Wegner observes the family celebrations that take place each Spring, recognizing Father's Day especially.

Dear Friends,

As I travel throughout the district, I see many families and, especially during the months of May and June, many family celebrations. During these months we typically see graduations, gatherings for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and especially, many weddings.

In times like these, when the sanctity of the family is under attack, it is good to reflect on the importance of holy families. These families are the product of holy marriages, and of holy mothers and holy fathers.

In 1983, on the feast of the Holy Family, Archbishop Lefebvre spoke of the need for holy fathers and mothers in order to raise saints in their families.

The Church tells us that it is on the day of the wedding of Cana that Our Lord instituted the sacrament of marriage. Not only did Our Lord want to institute marriage, but He wanted to sanctify it by a special grace, a sacrament.

This shows us the esteem that God Himself has for holy families. Families made, instituted by a particular grace, by a particular sacrament, to produce saints…

And today, more than ever, we can see the need for these holy families…

Think for example of St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine. St. Augustine said: 'It is to my mother that I owe my conversion.'

And how many could say that? 'It’s because of my mother, it’s because of my father, that I am what I am—that I have faith, the Catholic Faith—that, by the grace of God,

I am on the path to Heaven...'

During this month in which most Americans celebrate Father’s Day, remember the many sacrifices your fathers made for your Faith. Show them your appreciation and love by your prayers and sacrifices.

And, while you are thinking about fathers, please don’t forget your spiritual fathers, your priests. They too make many sacrifices for you and your families—the long-distance travel, the early mornings and late nights, the many hours in the confessional. They too contribute to holy families and to the sanctification of you and your children.

In appreciation for their sacrifices on your behalf, would you consider making a regular monthly donation by joining our “In Partnership with Priests” program? Any amount you can afford helps me to provide for our priests, $30, $20, or even $10 per month.

Please consider donating towards this apostolate.

Be assured of my prayers and my gratitude,

Sincerely yours,
