The U.S. District of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) shares the sad news of the recent death of Fr. Juan Carlos Iscara.
After several months of declining health, he fell asleep in the Lord early on Thursday, December 21, 2023. Surrounded by brother priests at the Sursum Corda House, the District's home for elderly and sick priests, he was fortified by the Last Rites and everything Holy Mother Church has to offer her departing souls.
An only child, born in 1951, Father hailed from Argentina. After receiving degrees in history from the Instituto Nacional del Profesorado (1973) and the Facultad de Filosofia y Letras from the Universidad de Buenos Aires (1977), Father entered the SSPX seminary in La Reja, Argentina, in 1982. Ordained a priest by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1986, Fr. Iscara spent 30 of his 37 years of priesthood forming future priests, primarily at St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, where he has been assigned since 1993.
His first assignment after ordination was as an assistant priest at the Society's mission in Wanganui, New Zealand, from 1987 to 1989. In 1989, he spent a year as a seminary professor at Holy Cross Seminary in Australia. From November 1989 to August 1993, he was District Superior of Mexico. In 1993, he was assigned to the seminary in Winona, MN, where he was most known for his penetrating and comprehensive grasp of moral theology and Catholic history. Over the years, he taught other classes, including Acts of the Magisterium and Literature.
Outside the seminary, Father Iscara was known for his cheerful demeanor, his many contributions to The Angelus and the work of Angelus Press, the history and doctrinal sessions circulated over many years, his presentations at conferences and sermons, and his work with young priests in continuing education for moral theology. His formation of several decades of priests in the vineyard and his influence will thus continue to benefit souls for many years.
Please join the priests and religious of the Society, along with the lay faithful who work for the U.S. District, in praying for the repose of Fr. Iscara's soul. May God quickly receive his good and faithful servant into the halls of Heaven. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
Please see the seminary's website for practical details about the funeral.
