A new ordinace protecting pre-born life in the city of Albuquerque, NM was nearly passed into law despite the great monetary expendicture and deceitful actions of pro-abortion advocates.

Residents in Albuquerque, New Mexico, watched closely last Tuesday, November 19th, as the votes from the day were tallied. They were not alone. Pro-life advocates and abortion supporters from around the nation were also keeping a close eye on the municipal election. The "Albuquerque Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance" was the first city-based ballot measure in the history of the United States. This fight is typically found at state or federal levels.

At the end of the day, the ballot was defeated 44.74 to 55.26%. However, pro-life advocates were not discouraged. This was only the beginning in this new effort to legally end abortions. Abortion supporters spent four times the amount of money as pro-lifers, with hundreds of thousands of dollars being poured into defeating the measure. Planned Parenthood of New York even hosted a phone bank effort in mid-November to call Albuquerque voters and sway them to vote "no" on the ballot. Their fight against this ban did not stop there.

Not surprisingly, deception abounded in the ranks of the anti-lifers. The campaign website for the pro-life group heading up the ban was hacked, redirecting emails to the local pro-abortion opposition. This was reported to the FBI as a cyber-crime by the ABQ Voters For Late Term Abortion Ban PAC. Another report was made to the FBI by them for potential voter fraud, as stories came in of University of New Mexico students being approached and offered monetary compensation for voting against the ban.

For all of the efforts made by the forces against life, one can almost take comfort in how close the margin was on the final vote. This is especially true when one takes into consideration that there are currently no laws whatsoever against abortion in the state of New Mexico, where Albuquerque has been dubbed the Abortion Capital of the West.

Slowly but surely, the tide is changing in the war against abortion. 54 abortion clinics have closed nationwide in the last three years, 44 of them closing in 2013 alone. Pro-life groups plan to take the new grassroots effort of a municipal ballot to cities around the nation, putting the chance to end abortion in the hands of local citizens.

As so often happens, some battles must be lost in order to find the footing needed to win the entire war. May we continue and redouble our prayers to end this scourge on our country. As George Washington said in the famous "1776 Address to His Troops": "The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army".

Our Lady of the Rosary, La Conquistadora, pray for us, and our unborn millions!
