What is an encyclical?
Papal encyclicals are letters from the pope to the bishops. Encyclicals address some aspect of Catholic doctrine and are to be read as the Church's official position on an issue. They therefore should be read carefully by all Catholics who wish to not only undertstand the Church's attitude on a particular issue but who also strive to conform their minds to that of the Church.
