The Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Buen Suceso of the Purification takes place every year in Quito, Ecuador, in the world’s oldest European style city center.
January 23 – February 2 are the dates for the pilgrimage, as it centers on a novena in preparation for the Feast of the Purification.
We keep a novena leading up to the feast in imitation of the original observance in 1611. The religious of the city preached for nine days in preparation for the Feast. Various religious orders were mandated by the bishop which demonstrated he understood the importance and meaning of the miraculous statue.
While this custom has ceased, our morning rosary processions seek to revive this spirit by going to the various religious houses of the city.
