"In a landmark ruling, Dobbs v. Jackson, the Supreme Court overturned both Roe and Casey while upholding a Mississippi statute outlawing abortion after the first trimester."

Dear Friends,

On May 20 of this year, I wrote to invite you to join the priests and religious of the Society of Saint Pius X to make a novena to the Queenship of Our Lady for several intentions, including the overturning of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the Supreme Court cases that erroneously forged a right to abortion. Today, our prayers and the prayers of millions of Catholic faithful for decades, were answered.

In a landmark ruling, Dobbs v. Jackson, the Supreme Court overturned both Roe and Casey while upholding a Mississippi statute outlawing abortion after the first trimester. It is providential that this pro-life ruling comes on June 24, the day the Church regularly celebrates the Feast of St. John the Baptist and, this year, honors the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As the Baptist witnessed for the truth and condemned the evils of his day even in the face of social and political opposition, so has the Church stood witness to the sanctity of life while condemning the evils of abortion. And out of His superabundant love for us, Our Lord has guided us toward protecting the unborn.

The fight, however, is not over. While legal opinions vary, it appears that today’s ruling will lead to abortion restrictions of varying degrees in 20 states with perhaps 10 more poised to do the same. This leaves at least 20 states where abortion will remain, by and large, freely available. Undoubtedly, pro-abortion activists and politicians will move to expand abortion access on a state-by-state basis. There are even calls for the federal government to step in and curtail the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs. Today is a day for thanksgiving to God, but not at the expense of remaining vigilant in prayer and Catholic action for the protection of life in service to Christ the King.

Please continue to work for the full and final eradication of the scourge of abortion. Offer prayers and sacrifices to that end. Work with reputable Catholic outlets to assist pregnant women in need so they understand that terminating a human life is never the answer. Promote the social Kingship of Christ in your everyday lives and demonstrate with the spirit of prayer, humility, patience, and love that what we in the United States and throughout the world need now more than ever is God.

In the Sacred Heart of Jesus,

Fr. John Fullerton
