Space Available for Upcoming Retreats - Make Plans Today for Spiritual Growth in 2018

Our Lady of Sorrows Retreat House - Phoenix

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are powerful forces of spiritual renewal, and offer unparalleled opportunities to allow the Holy Ghost to speak to us.

Priests, bishops, and popes throughout history have recommended and lauded the Spiritual Exercises.

Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre invited two preachers of the Cooperators of Christ the King to Dakar to preach the exercises while he was Archbishop there. Others copied his action in the Ivory Coast and Cameroon, with remarkable success. When he was Archbishop at Tulle upon his return to France, he recommended them to his faithful in his pastoral letters.  As founder of the Society of Saint Pius X, he incorporated into the Statutes a paragraph on the continuation of the spiritual formation of seminarians and priests. He prescribed: “They will also love the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, highly recommended by the Popes, and which will be one day for them a powerful tool of their ministry.”

Pope Pius XI (who reigned from 1922-1939), wrote twice in praise of the Spiritual Excercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola which are utilized in the SSPX's retreat centers. The first writing was an apostolic letter, Meditantibus nobis on December 3, 1922, for the occasion of the 300th year anniversary of the canonization of St. Ignatius, while the second was an encyclical, Mens nostra on December 20, 1929.

And Bishop Fellay, Superior General of the SSPX, recently wrote:

...Although family and school provide indispensable protection for young people who are being educated, what can be done to support those who leave their parents’ home and go out into the world? We are greatly concerned about the perseverance of these young adults on the path of good and virtue, keeping their souls in a state of grace in the midst of such a perverted world. And so we can find no stronger antidote than the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, which we most assuredly consider as one of the greatest treasures and means of sanctification that has been placed in our hands – just after the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Holy Rosary.

"The Exercises were truly made for our times and are capable of providing the courage, strength and heroism necessary today for all souls of good will. This is why we insistently invite you not to neglect this means that has been placed at your disposal. Without a doubt, we consider the Spiritual Exercises as one of the spearheads of the Society, and the cause of that genuine miracle of grace which Christian life is today. "

Please consider the importance of a renewal of your spiritual life weighed against the common objections of time, travel, and expense - and plan your retreat this year.
